Bringing Your Whole Self to God
Sometimes we can get the idea that following God means becoming someone completely different. We may look at other Christians and think we need to pray like they pray, speak like they speak, serve like they serve, or even have the same personality they have. But God never asked you to become someone else.
God wants you to bring your whole self to Him.
When we come to Christ, He does not require us to abandon the personality, gifts, creativity, and passions He placed within us. Instead, He redeems them. He takes the things that make us uniquely who we are and can use them for His glory.
Your sense of humor can open a door to someone who needs encouragement. Your creativity can help communicate the gospel in a way someone understands. Your sense of style can help you connect with people who may never walk into a traditional church environment. Your love for sports, music, art, gaming, cooking, fashion, or any other hobby can create opportunities to build genuine relationships and point people toward Jesus.
God is not limited to using one type of person.
We can sometimes believe that being used by God means fitting into a specific mold. We see someone who is gifted at preaching and assume that is what being a faithful Christian looks like. We see someone who loves evangelism and think we need to have their personality. We see someone who is bold, outgoing, or deeply expressive and wonder if something is wrong with us because we are wired differently.
But God intentionally created us differently.
Your uniqueness is not something you have to overcome in order to be useful to God. It can become part of how He uses you. The people you naturally connect with, the spaces you naturally enter, and the gifts you naturally carry can all become opportunities for ministry.
That does not mean God will never challenge us to grow. He absolutely will. Following Jesus means allowing Him to transform our character, confront our sin, and shape us to become more like Him. But spiritual growth does not mean losing your personality. Sanctification is not God making everyone look the same. It is God making us more like Christ while still using the unique ways He created each of us.
You do not need to become like someone else to be effective for God.
You do not need someone else's personality, platform, gifting, or calling. You need to faithfully surrender what God has already placed in you.
So bring your whole self to God. Bring your creativity. Bring your humor. Bring your passions. Bring your personality. Bring your gifts and your interests. Ask God how He can redeem them and use them to reach the people He has placed around you.
God can use you as you are uniquely wired for His glory. You do not have to become someone else to make a difference.
