When We Doubt God

Doubting God is much more common than we think.

For many Christians, doubt can feel like something we are not allowed to talk about. We are often taught that doubting God is wrong and that a strong Christian would never question, struggle, or wonder if God is really there. So when doubt creeps in, we can feel ashamed. We may wonder if something is wrong with our faith or if we are somehow failing God.

But the truth is that we all experience doubt from time to time.

Doubt does not automatically mean that you are a bad Christian, a bad person, or that you have lost your faith. Sometimes the cares of life can make it difficult to see God clearly. Pain, disappointment, unanswered prayers, persecution, loss, and uncertainty can cause us to ask questions we never expected to ask.

The Bible does not hide these moments.

One of the clearest examples is Thomas. After Jesus was crucified and the disciples told Thomas that they had seen the risen Christ, Thomas struggled to believe it. He wanted evidence. He had questions. Yet Jesus did not abandon him in his doubt.

Jesus came to Thomas.

He met him right where he was and addressed the very thing he was struggling with. Jesus did not leave Thomas to figure everything out on his own. He gave him what he needed to move from doubt toward belief.

We also see this with John the Baptist.

John had boldly proclaimed Jesus and prepared the way for Him. Yet while John was imprisoned and suffering, he began to wrestle with doubt. He sent his disciples to Jesus with a question: “Are you the Christ, or should we wait for another?”

Think about that. John the Baptist, the man who recognized Jesus and proclaimed His coming, had a moment when he needed reassurance.

Jesus did not condemn him for asking.

Instead, Jesus responded by pointing John back to what God was doing. He gave him evidence that the promises of God were being fulfilled.

These stories remind us that doubt is not something we need to hide from God. When questions come, we can bring them to Him.

God already knows what is happening in our hearts.

So what do we do when we doubt?

Cling to the Lord.

Do not allow doubt to convince you to run away from God. Run toward Him. Pray honestly. Tell Him what you are struggling with. Ask Him to strengthen your faith and give you wisdom. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and remind you of what is true. Continue reading Scripture, even when you do not have all the answers.

You may not always have immediate answers to every question. You may go through seasons where your faith feels stronger than others. But God is faithful even when we are struggling.

Doubt does not have to be the end of your faith. Sometimes it can become an invitation to seek God more deeply.

When life gets hard and your faith feels shaken, remember that you are not the first person to struggle. Thomas doubted. John the Baptist questioned. The people of God throughout Scripture wrestled with fear, uncertainty, and confusion.

And God met them there.

So if you are doubting today, do not run from the Lord. Cling to Him. Ask Him to strengthen you. Ask Him to help you persevere. Bring your questions into His presence and trust that He can handle them.

Your doubts do not scare God. He is strong enough to meet you in them and faithful enough to carry you through them.
